The Ancient Rule of the Guest
In the ancient Eddic poem Hávamál, Odin speaks of the sacred balance of hospitality:
“Fire is needed by him who has come in
and whose knees are numb;
food and clothes he needs who has wandered
over the mountain.
Water he needs who comes to the feast,
a towel, and a welcome;
goodwill if he can get it,
talk and answer in return.”
Hospitality is not about expensive performance; it is the fundamental moral law that links separate human lives into enduring kinship. When traveling kin cross the threshold after long highway miles, the hall is hallowed by opening the door wide, pouring fresh coffee, and breaking bread together around the central table.

Kinship and Tabletop Fellowship
Tonight on the ridge, the energy of the homestead is anchored by four ancient runes of kinship and peace:
- ᛟ (Othala - Heritage & Ancestry): Honoring the living line of ancestry that walks across the threshold. Welcoming maternal kin under your roof, sharing old memories and fresh bread, anchors the homestead in deep temporal soil.
- ᚷ (Gebo - The Sacred Gift): The mutual exchange where giving and receiving are one. Generosity offered without transaction; presence received with gratitude.
- ᚹ (Wunjo - Fellowship & Joy): The spontaneous laughter around the gaming table, solving cooperative mysteries, and celebrating victories together. Wunjo is the golden harmony of honest companionship.
- ᛉ (Algiz - The Horned Elk Shield): Outside, the autumn winds rustle the trees, the coop is latched tight, and the guardian companions rest peacefully. The perimeter is held.
The Evening Hearth Blessing
“Hail to the Keepers of the Hearth and Weavers of Kinship!
Hail to the Landvættir of the High Ridge!The threshold is blessed where mother and kin gather;
The bread has been broken, the coffee poured, the laughter shared.
The lamps burn warm and low in the quiet hall.May Othala (ᛟ) ground this home in quiet strength and abiding love;
May Wunjo (ᚹ) leave its sweet afterglow upon our hearts;
And may Algiz (ᛉ) cast its high, antlered shield over this roof tonight - *
*Guarding the hearth, the flock, and all who rest beneath.The watch is kept. All is well upon the ridge.
So it is spoken. Hail!” ᛟ ᚷ ᚹ ᛉ
