The Sturgeon Moon Approaches

Máni, Jera, and the Coming Eclipse

High on the Appalachian ridge at 1,600 feet elevation, the night sky is flooded with brilliant silver brilliance.

The Waxing Light of the Sturgeon Moon

High on the Appalachian ridge at 1,600 feet elevation, the night sky is flooded with brilliant silver brilliance. The moon rides as a Waxing Gibbous at 88% illumination - the herald of the August Sturgeon Full Moon.

In northern lore, this celestial body is not an inert satellite; it is Máni, the ancient driver who guides the chariot of the moon across the vault of heaven, steadfastly navigating the starry lanes while pursued by the cosmic wolf Hati.

In late August, the Sturgeon Moon marks the arrival of the second harvest. The summer corn is filled out; the delicata squashes have set their cream-and-green striped skins; the night air cools into the crisp 50s.

This August, however, the Sturgeon Moon brings a rare cosmic alignment: in two nights, a 96% Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse will sweep directly across North America, plunging the silver disc into the deep copper-red shadow of the Earth.

Jera and the Deepening Season

Tonight is governed by ᛃ Jera (the rune of the seasonal wheel and the earned fruit) paired with ᛉ Algiz (the protective shield).

Think of the biological alignment anchored across the homestead:

  • The living soil, recently drenched with active microbial ferments, drinks deeply in the cool dark.
  • The squashes, tomatoes, and late cabbages stand firm in their raised smart containers.
  • The flock roosts peacefully in the cedar-framed coop.
  • The home is latched against the rising mountain winds.

When you walk the boundary stones under an 88% moon, the rhythm of the year becomes visceral. Summer’s raw, explosive growth is yielding to autumn’s dense, quiet maturation.

Evening Sturgeon Moon Invocation

“Hail Máni, Silver Driver of the Night Sky!
Hail to Jörð, Mother Earth, and the Landvættir of the High Ridge!

The soil is fed, the crops stand tall in the starlight,
The flock rests safe beneath the timber roof.
Algiz (ᛉ) casts its high horned shield over this sanctuary,
Guarding the hearth, the threshold, and all who dwell within.

As the Sturgeon Moon waxes toward the red shadow of Earth,
May your body rest, your weary nerves find ease, and your mind touch quiet stillness.
The labor of the day is accomplished; the watch is kept.

So it is spoken. Hail!” ᛉ ᛃ
